Learning outcomes

Biosynthesis, secretion and actions of insulin Epidemiology with particular attention to gender differences, criteria and path for ljavascript:void(0);a diagnosis of type 1 and 2 diabetes. Classification of diabetes mellitus. Pathophysiological mechanisms and metabolic anomalies underlying diabetes and early and advanced manifestations in type 1 and 2 diabetes. Treatment of diabetes: intensive insulin therapy, types of insulins, glycemic targets and monitoring, treatment schemes; oral hypoglycemic therapy (available drugs, mechanisms of action, effects); emerging therapies. Acute metabolic complications of diabetes: hypoglycemia, ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state Prevention, identification and treatment of chronic micro-macro vascular and non-vascular complications. Management of diabetes in particular situations: intercurrent illnesses, fasting, surgery, in patients with artificial nutrition. Pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnostic criteria and treatment principles of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
