Federica Canzan, PhD, MSc, RN

I am a Full Professor of Nursing Science at the University of Verona (since 2026), where I previously served as Associate Professor from 2020. I am also Vice-President of the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Nursing.

I hold a PhD in Educational Sciences and Lifelong Learning (2015) and a Master’s degree in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences (2009, with full marks), both from the University of Verona. In 2013 I was a Junior Researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Before my academic career, I spent more than ten years in clinical practice as a Registered Nurse at Verona University Hospital. I worked in General Surgery and then in the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit. During those years I also worked with the School of Nursing as a clinical preceptor and on simulation-based assessments of practical and relational skills (OSCEs).

My research focuses on nursing education and clinical learning environments, caring, nursing organisational models and outcomes, clinical decision-making, and evidence-based practice. I have particular expertise in qualitative research, and I also use mixed-methods and quantitative designs. I have authored more than 70 indexed publications.

I am an Associate Editor for PLOS ONE, Healthcare and the Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences.
