Learning outcomes

To provide the student with relevant scientific information on Darwinian evolutionary theories, as well as the social and historical context and settings in which Charles Darwin lived and studied. It is important to underline how in biology and biomedicine everything must be interpreted and explained in a Darwinian way (mutation and natural selection). Explain how, with increasing knowledge, from classical Darwinism we came to the "neodarwinism", integrating the basic knowledge with the most recent discoveries of genetics and molecular biology.


Initial observations of Darwin on biodiversity. The around-the-world trip on the Beagle. Formulation of ideas and theory of the origin of the species. Influence of Darwin's thought on the whole philosophy of science of the time. Outline of population genetics: Hardy-Weinberg law. Celebration of Darwin Day.
