The aim of the course is to define and discuss the problems of severe trauma of the abdomen and thorax. The course will be based on the clinical approach to the patient with severe trauma in order to provide participants with a guide for intra-hospital management focused on diagnosis, therapeutic approach and surgical indications. ATLS approach, management of severe trauma in the emergency room, haemorrhagic shock, blunt and penetrating trauma to the chest and abdomen will be illustrated through the presentation and discussion of clinical cases.
Definition, mechanisms of injuries and epidemiology of severe trauma. Elements of pathophysiology of trauma. Clinical pictures of trauma.
Diagnostic and therapeutic approach in the Emergency Room. ATLS concept. Damage control.
Introduction to blunt and penetrating trauma. Shock in patients with severe trauma.
Trauma of the chest.
Trauma of the abdomen and perineum.
Discussion of clinical cases.
