At the end of the course the student: 1) Will know the assumptions and general criteria for interpreting laboratory tests based on the concepts of normality, reference intervals, intra- and inter-individual analytical and biological variability. They will be able to interpret the diagnostic value of laboratory tests, in terms of specificity, sensitivity, positive and negative predictive value. 2) Will know the fundamental principles of laboratory methodologies in the pre-analytical phase (collection, treatment and conservation of samples), in the analytical phase (fundamental principles and implementation of the most important laboratory techniques), and in the post-analytical phase (collection, data processing and reporting; interpretations of results, quality control). 3) He will know the pathophysiological meaning underlying the alterations of laboratory indices and will be able to integrate these alterations with the signs and symptoms clinically detected by the anamnesis and physical examination to arrive at a diagnostic interpretation of the most important clinical syndromes. 4) Based on the pathophysiological and clinical significance of the laboratory tests, they will be able to recognize the reasons for the examination requests, the operational logic and the semiological value of the individual tests in a typical clinical case series.
