Overview
This course aims to train participants to become health professionals with advanced, up-to-date, scientifically-based specialist skills in the clinical, assistential and rehabilitative management of patients with cerebrovascular diseases, especially stroke victims.
By the of the course, participants should be able to:
- perform advanced neurological assessments (urgent, initial and follow-up) and use tools to assess neurological loss in stroke patients, in particular the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHHS);
- carry out constant monitoring and target the interventions for managing the most considerable problems, identifying any changes in the patient in the least time possible;
- make evidence-based decisions for managing the acute phase of the most common epidemiologic problems, e.g. intracranial pressure (ICP), abnormal body temperature, changes in blood glucose, swallowing, high blood pressure or seizures;
- take on an advisory, empowerment or professional development role in training colleagues to manage situations of clinical, assistential or rehabilitative instability and complexity;
- implement and coordinate clinical care pathways for stroke patients to ensure timely, integrated, coordinated medical intervention aimed at reducing the chance of death and improving functional recovery;
- communicate “bad” news and deal with the reactions of the patient and their family;
- use counselling techniques with the patient and their family in the acute and post-acute phases;
- encourage the participation and empowerment of the patient and their family in decision-making processes regarding treatment.
