Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with introductory knowledge of epidemiological methodology. The main sources of measurement error and the consequences of measurement error in scientific research will be discussed. An overview of observational and experimental study designs will be provided, and inference techniques and the interpretation of statistical significance will be illustrated.

- experimental and observational research
- disease frequency measures and association estimates
- main observational and experimental study designs
- methods for analyzing binary outcomes
- measurement error (precision, accuracy and validity)
- tests of hypotheses and confidence intervals
- studies of superiority, non-inferiority and equivalence
- the logical pitfalls of threshold-based statistical significance
- the problem of multiple tests
