The composition of the Council of the School of Medicine and Surgery includes:
a) the Dean;
b) the Heads of the Departments that contributed to the establishment of the School;
c) an elected student representation, amounting to 15% of the members of the School Council, chosen from among students enrolled in the degree programmes coordinated by the School;
d) three representatives of students enrolled in medical residency programmes, one from each of the three areas (medical, surgical, and services);
e) one representative of the Directors of the medical residency programmes;
f) one representative of the Directors of the surgical residency programmes;
g) one representative of the Directors of the residency programmes in the services area;
h) the Chairs of the Teaching Committees of the degree programmes belonging to the School;
i) two Associate Professors and two Researchers from each Department that contributed to the establishment of the School.
The Council of the School of Medicine and Surgery performs the following functions:
Elects the Dean of the School and the members of the Joint Faculty-Student Committee;
Approves the School's Operating Regulations, the Three-Year Strategic Plan, and the Annual Report on activities prepared by the Joint Faculty-Student Committee;
Proposes to the Board of Directors and the Academic Senate the establishment, activation, modification, and discontinuation of degree programmes, as well as their respective academic regulations and curricula;
Defines and oversees, in collaboration with the affiliated Departments, internationalisation initiatives;
Issues a mandatory opinion on Department recruitment plans in order to assess their consistency with and integration into the strategic planning of the affiliated healthcare institutions;
Formulates proposals to be submitted to the Chief Executive Officers of the healthcare institutions involved in the teaching network concerning the organisation and delivery of healthcare activities, with a view to achieving optimal integration with the University's teaching and research needs;
Issues a mandatory opinion to be submitted to the Rector regarding the establishment or closure of operational units that are relevant to teaching and research activities;
Issues a mandatory opinion on all University resolutions concerning contractual and institutional agreements with the National Health Service.
