Learning outcomes

The course aims at:
- providing the basic knowledge of structural, functional and molecular of living organisms;
- providing the basic knowledge of genetics and the transmission mode of hereditable characters in humans.

Fundamental objective of the course is provide students with basic knowledge of human biology and the general mechanisms of molecular and cell biology.

At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate to have acquired scientific terminology and knowledge useful to critically understand fundamental biology, also in relationship with the status of human health.

Syllabus

General characteristics of living organisms.
- Life macromolecules: DNA, RNA.
- Cell structure and function: general characteristics, subcellular components. Plasma membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus.
- The molecular basis of hereditary information. DNA characteristics. DNA replication.
- Gene expression. Genetic code, transcription, translation.
- Mutations: types and effects. Spontaneous mutations. Mutagenesis by chemical and physical agents.
- Genome Organization.
- Chromatin: composition and structure.
- Chromosomes: structural patterns, karyotype, anomalies.
- The cell cycle. Mitosis
- Sexual and meiosis reproduction. Gametogenesis.
- Genetics. Transmission of hereditary characters, Mendel's laws. Genotype and phenotype, autosomal and sex-related inheritance.

Lessons are delivered in dual mode - face to face and remotely. The material of the lessons will be available in the Moodle space.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam of the Applied Biology module is performed as written test, in parallel with the Biochemistry module. The final evaluation takes into account the evaluation of each module. The test potentially covers all the topics listed in the program. Items are formulated as multiple answer questions and open answer questions. The answer to each item requires knowledge of biological terminology, ability to systematically connect knowledge of biology and genetic molecules, ability to describe and exemplify biological structures.
The exam is structured as follows: - 16 multiple choice questions, each with four possible answers. Each correct answer scores 1.5 points. - 2 open questions, to be briefly answered in a limited space. Each open answer is worth 5 points. The exam has a duration of 60 minutes.
The examination will be validated with a minimum score of 18/30.

The exam is held in person. In any case, for the year 2020-2021 the remote modality is guaranteed for all students who request it.
