Learning outcomes

The module aims to give the basic knowledge about the physics of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation to ionizing. During the course will be exposed the principles of radiobiology and the main standards of radiation protection, in order to allow to act in a cautious and professional way, with a correct evaluation of the problems related to the use of ionizing radiation.

Syllabus

Notions of physics
Ionising and non-ionising radiation
Sizes and units of measurement
Elements of dosimetry.
Definition of dosimetric quantities: absorbed dose, dose equivalent, effective dose. Dose limits for workers and population.
Elements of radiobiology. Radiation-matter interaction. Stochastic effects and deterministic effects.
Natural radioactivity: Radioactive decay. Law of radioactive decay. Alpha, beta decay
and range. Environmental exposure risk from Radon.
Artificial sources: X-rays, radioisotopes for diagnostic and therapeutic use.
Medical use of ionizing radiation.
Applications in radiodiagnostics: traditional radiodiagnostics and CT.
Applications in radiotherapy: radiotherapy with external beams, brachytherapy.
Applications in nuclear medicine: use of radioisotopes for imaging and metabolic radiotherapy.
Radiation protection.
Reference regulatory framework. Principles of justification and optimization in the use of ionizing radiation. Employer's and worker's compliance with radiation protection. Ionising radiation protection devices. Instruments and techniques for dose measurement.
Non-ionising radiation (NIR).
Physical aspects of NIR. Medical applications.
