Learning outcomes

Train the student to the biological terminology used for the description and discussion of fundamental experiments in biology; provide students with the basic information that allows the distinction among the different living being; to teach the student the characteristics of the cell and of the principal macromolecules that compose it.


1. Describe the morphological and functional characteristics of the virus, prokaryotes and eukaryotes and indicate the cell structures that distinguish them. Brief outline on biological evolution. Miller-Urey's experiment.
2. Explain the structure of biological membranes and describe their functional features, blood groups, techniques to study cell membranes. Frye and Edidin's experiment .
3. Describe tissue organization and cell-to-cell to interactions, extracellular matrix and cell differentiation.
4. Describe the cell cycle phases, mitosis and meiosis and the structural changes associated with them.
6. Interpret the observations and experiments that led to the discovery of the genetic material: Griffith's experiments on bacterial transformation, experiments by Hershey and Chase, Avery, MacLeod and MacCarty on the identification of the genetic material; Beadle and Tatum's experiments correlating for the first time genotype with phenotype in Neurospora crassa.
7. Explain the genetic code, the mechanisms of replication, transcription and translation identifying the cellular structures and molecular components involved in the synthesis and transport of proteins; Meselson-Stahl's experiments. DNA repair systems.
8. Showing examples of the different levels of gene expression and regulation in eukaryotic and prokaryotes cells, gene regulation in differentiation, molecular structure of the genes, nucleotide sequences, RNA maturation, non-coding RNAs (outline). Animal cloning: the experiments of Gurdon, Dolly the cloned sheep.
9. Describe the biological models applied in biomedical technologies

Assessment methods and criteria

Written test with multiple choice test and open questions followed by an oral test.
