Learning outcomes

Familiarize the student with the basic concepts regarding the world of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and parasites. Notions on the structure and diversity of various microorganisms. Provide the student with theoretical knowledge on the causes, pathogenetic mechanisms, microbiological diagnosis and control of infection diseases, in order to fully utilize the contents of the subsequent teachings.

The approach to safety in the microbiology laboratory (containment levels with related structures and activities. Biosafety cabins).
Sterilization principles and techniques:
sterilization by dry and wet heat
filtration sterilization
radiation sterilization
gas sterilization
Techniques for observing optical microscope preparations:
The optical microscope
dry lens observation
observation with immersion objective
bright field observation
dark field observation
phase contrast observation
Electron microscopy principles
Microscopic examination of bacteria:
direct or fresh observation
Colors for bacteria, fungi, protozoa
Cultivation of bacteria:
Culture media: basic, enriched, selective, differential, enrichment, transport media, for antibiograms, for fungi
Techniques and principles of sowing and isolation and identification of microorganisms:
microbial isolation methods: general rules for plate isolation, general isolation techniques, transfer of pure cultures, techniques for maintaining pure cultures. Sowing techniques of biological samples.
Principles of identification of bacteria:
identification based on biochemical activity
identification based on serological and immunological techniques
Microbial counting methods
Methods for determining sensitivity to antimicrobial agents:
dilution and diffusion methods
Techniques for visualizing the antigen-antibody reaction:
enzyme immunoassay, immunofluorescence, latex agglutination test
