MM: STATISTICA PER LA RICERCA SPERIMENTALE

The course is structured in theoretical lessons (30h) provided in dual mode (face to face and remote). The teaching material is made available to the students on the e-learning web page of the course (Moodle platform). DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS - The measurement process in medicine: measurement scales, validity, precision and accuracy - Statistical variables and frequency distributions - How to summarize the distribution of one or more variables: measures of location and dispersion, contingency tables PROBABILITY THEORY - Definitions of probability - Rules of probability calculation - Independent and conditional probabilities - Random variables - Gauss, Student's T and chi-squared distributions - How to assess the validity of a diagnostic tool: sensitivity and specificity, ROC curves INFERENTIAL STATISTICS - An outline of sampling theory - Sample distribution of an estimator - Confidence interval - The logic of the statistical test: null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis, type I and type II errors, power of a statistical test, p-value, Z test, Student's T test and Pearson's chi-squared test PRINCIPLES OF OBSERVATIONAL EPIDEMIOLOGY: - Definition and objectives of epidemiology - Measures of disease frequency: prevalence, cumulative incidence, incidence rate - Measures of association: attributable risk, relative risk, odds ratio - Design and analysis of an observational epidemiological study: cross-sectional, case-control and cohort designs - Effect modification - Causal interpretation of an empirical association: random variability, systematic variability (selection bias and information bias), confounding

EVALUATION TOOLS • indicators of the health status of the population (rates, indices, mortality, morbidity, causes of death, causes of illness, avoidable mortality) • population structure indicators (birth rate, aging index, Lexis curve, family composition, population distribution in the area) • indicators of use of healthcare facilities (number and size of hospital facilities in Italy, hospitalization rates, hospital discharge cards, consumption of drugs, number of services and efficiency of facilities) • performance evaluation indicators (Il Programma Nazionale Esiti (PNE); Sistema di Valutazione delle Performance dei Sistemi Sanitari Regionali) PROGRAMMING TOOLS applied to specific problems: • needs assessment • evaluation of resources • tools for analyzing the effectiveness of resource allocation MANAGEMENT OF CLINICAL RISK IN HOSPITAL AND TERRITORIAL CONTEXTS THE POLICY FOR OBJECTIVES AND THE BUDGET MANAGEMENT HISTORY PROCESS

Assessment methods and criteria

The final test consists of 3 exams, one for each unit. To pass the final test, the student must get a score of not less than 18/30 in each exam. The final mark (in thirtieths) is the weighted average over credits of the 3 scores.

The final test is a written exam in presence with short answer questions and multiple choice questions. The remote exam is however guaranteed for all students who request it in the academic year 2020/21. The aim of the test is to verify the knowledge of all the topics discussed. The final evaluation is expressed in thirtieths.
