The main task of the course is to examine molecular mechanisms responsible for cell and tissue damage, as well as implicated in the host response to cell damage and in its repairment. In addition, the course addresses pathophysiological mechanisms at the basis of alterations of the main homeostatic systems, compensation responses induced by these alterations and their potential significance as mechanisms of diseases.
Detailed program of General Pathology
- Basic concepts in pathology (health and disease, etiology and pathogenesis, omeostasis, functional reserve)
- General classification of causes of diseases
- Alterations of chomosome structure, gene mutations and molecular basis of genetic diseases
- Alterations of membrane transport
- Alterations of inter-cellular communication and membrane receptor function with reference to lipoprotein receptors and their role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and pathology of adhesive interactions in the context of leukocyte recruitment, platelet aggregation, blood coagul ation and thrombosis
- Alterations of signal transduction
- Pathologies due to ethanol and other common chemical compounds
- Mechanisms of reactive oxygen species formation and their role in cell pathology
