Learning outcomes

The course aims are to:

provide an introduction to the physical principles and techniques of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI);

introduce methods to control the image quality characteristics;

present an overview of the possible interactions of static magnetic fields, time-varying magnetic fields and radiofrequency fields with biological tissue.

Syllabus

Angular momentum and magnetic moments; Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR); relaxation times and pulse sequences; magnetic field gradients, localization of the MR signal and image reconstruction; image characteristics, k-space and data acquisition; diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, chemical shift and magnetic resonance spectroscopy; MR angiography, arterial spin labelling perfusion imaging (ASL); biological effects of static magnetic fields, varying magnetic fields and RF fields, Patient and Worker safety in MRI.
