Learning outcomes

The general educational objectives of the course are centered on the principles of primary prevention. The main aspects of Industrial Toxicology are framed. The student is introduced to the problem of the handling of chemicals discussing the bases for acquiring the main toxicological information.


- Definition of risks and dangers.
- "Pharmacological" and "toxicological" characteristics of each chemical product. When a product is usable as a drug and when it has negative biological effects for human health.
- How to read a label of a chemical product: the risk phrases and the phrases of caution.
- Structure of the safety data sheets and their 16 "information fields".
- Pulmonary, intestinal and cutaneous absorption of chemical products.
- The characteristics of powders and fibers to be "biologically" effective on the lungs.
- Some aspects of toxicokinetics of order "0" and of order "1".
- General aspects of the biotransformation of chemical products; biotransformation of benzene, toluene and n-hexane. Kinetics of excretion of their main metabolites.
- Exposure limits in the workplace: comparison between American, German and Italian proposals.
- More effective research lines for the recovery of toxicological information.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written tests in the form of questions with multiple answers and oral integration. All questions are related to the topics discussed during the lectures in order to understand if the students have read the suggested books and learnt the main aspects of the course.
