Learning outcomes

Knowledge of the features of elements and compounds and of the principles that allow to understand their behaviour in biological systems; knowledge of reactivity of the different classes of organic compounds; to acquire of a solid chemical basis to allow interpretation of biochemical phenomena at a molecular level; knowledge of the structure-function relationship of proteins, sugars and lipids, of enzyme properties, and their reaction kinetics and catalytic mechanisms, of vitamins and hormones; knowledge of the pathways through which the livings synthetize and degrade sugars, lipids, amino acids and nucleotides, taking particular consideration to production and consumption of energy.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination of the "Chemistry and Propedeutic Biochemistry" module is organized in written questions of stoichiometry, acid-base and oxidation reactions and an organic chemistry reaction mechanism. The oral examination, which can be accessed after passing the written questions, consists of a series of questions regarding the understanding of the topics of general chemistry, organic chemistry and propedeutics biochemistry carried out during the course.

The examination of the "Biological Chemistry" module consists of written questions with multiple responses, a description of biochemical reactions or metabolic pathways. The oral examination, which is accessible after passing the written questions, consists of an interview aimed at evaluating the student's ability to use chemical and biochemical knowledge for the interpretation of physiological and pathological phenomena in humans.
