Learning outcomes

The aim of the course "Practical activity in medical statistics applied to dentistry" is to provide theoretical-practical tools for assessing the frequency of diseases in human populations and the associated risk factors. The course therefore aims to provide expertise in bio-statistics and information technology applied to biomedical data analysis. At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate to have understood how to apply bio-statistical methods to analyse data using a statistical software.

Syllabus

The course is structured in theoretical-practical lessons (12h) on the use of a statistical software (STATA) for the quantitative analysis of biomedical data.

1. Descriptive analysis

2. Statistical inference:
- Point estimate and confidence interval (measures of disease occurrence, measures of association)
- Statistical test (value of one parameter, probabilistic model)

3. Stratified analysis:
- Effect modification vs. confounding
- Stratum-specific estimates
- Testing homogeneity
- Pooled estimate
- Testing the stratified null hypothesis of no association

4. Simple and multiple linear regression models

Assessment methods and criteria

The final test is a written exam in computer lab.
The aim of the test is to verify the ability to solve a bio-medical problem by analyzing health data using the statistical software STATA.
The commands, results and interpretation of the analysis must be reported in written form.
The final evaluation is expressed in thirtieths.
