Learning outcomes

Knowledge of principles of growth and auxology; measures of growth, of bone and pubertal age.
Knowledge of most frequent growth pathologies, harmonic and disarmonic; overweight and obesity, epidemiology; general concepts of genetics and epigenetics.
Knowledge of skeletal functions and hormonal control of skeletal longitudinal growth, bone mass growth and peak bone mass. Knowledge of the importance of physical exercise on growth.
Knowledge of pediatric fractures, their epidemiology, causes and physiopathology. Definition and knowledge of primary and secondary pediatric osteoporosis: methods for prevention and therapy.
Knowledge of the importance of physical exercise, rehabilitative therapy, nutritional factors and pharmacological treatments in pediatric osteoporosis prevention and treatment. "Non accidental injuries" in children.
Knowledge of the importance of vitamin D as hormone for skeletal and extra-skeletal actions, for prevention and treatment of rickets.
Knowledge of the most frequent forms of musculoskeletal recurrent pain in children
Knowledge of osteogenesis imperfecta, some aspects of collagen physiopathology, surgical, rehabilitative and pharmacological treatments.

Syllabus

Growth and auxology; growth as a change in size, proportions and functions. Indicators of the state of health and methods of measurement. Bone age, pubertal age, Risser's sign.
Harmonic and disharmonic growth pathologies. Head circumference. Puberty and related events. Overweight and obesity, outline of epidemiology. Concepts of genetics and epigenetics. Body composition.
Skeletal functions and hormonal control of bone mass. Skeletal growth and growth control from the point of view of growth factors. Importance of physical exercise on growth. Concept of bone mass and peak bone mass. Endocrine mechanisms of bone and pubertal maturation in response to movement.
Factors for regulating bone shaping and remodeling. Methods of investigation of bone metabolism.
Fractures in the pediatric age, epidemiology, causes and pathophysiology. Definition and notes on primary and secondary childhood osteoporosis. Methods of prevention and treatment.
Importance of rehabilitation therapy and physical exercise in the prevention and treatment of pediatric osteoporosis. Nutritional and pharmacological factors in the prevention and treatment of pediatric osteoporosis. Notes on bone injuries from maltreatment.
Vitamin D as a hormone. Importance of vitamin D for bone and extraosseous actions. Prevention and treatment of rickets in pediatric age. Importance of vitamin D supplementation in all ages of life.
Recurrent musculoskeletal pains in the legs and feet. Growth pains, osteochondrosis typical of childhood and adolescence. Benign coxitis of the hip. Osteogenesis imperfecta, hints of collagen pathophysiology. Surgical, rehabilitative and pharmacological treatments.
