Learning outcomes

The goal of this module is to allow students at the end of the course using the knowledge of physics, biology, and physical health to know and understand under the provisions of law on radiation protection.
The different types of dose quantities
The instruments to measure them in the area of worker radiation protection,
The procedures avoiding external exposure and internal contamination
The biological effects of ionizing radiation.
The application of the radiation protection in the environment and in the workplace.

Basic background of atomic and nuclear physics.
Stable and unstable nuclei.
Classification of radiation.
Directly and indirectly ionizing & Non-Ionizing Radiations.
Interaction of radiation with matter.
The radioactivity. Radioactive elements. Nature of the radiation. The radioactive series.
Energy of radiation.
Description of a radioactive source. Radiation alpha, beta and gamma.
Laws of radioactive decay. Physical and biological half-lives.
Activities and dose: Activities in becquerels/Curie. Specific activity. Absorbed dose. Units of

measurement. Equivalent dose. Effective Dose. Dose rate. Quality factor. Collective dose.
Artificial radioactive isotopes. Fission. Activation analysis.
