Learning outcomes

this course aims to help students understand and understand the various aspects that characterize the migration phenomenon in Italy and in the world.
to know the health problems of migrants, in the specifics of sexual and reproductive health,
developing interservice, intercultural skills, knowledge, understanding skills, and skills that enable future health professionals to provide consistent care to the patient's different needs, avoiding standardization.
Analyze and stimulate reflection on our current modes of welcoming the immigrant population into the specificity of the perinatal context.
Know the figure of the cultural mediator and the alternatives that today the working context offers us.
Analyze, study and be able to identify the problem of Female Genital Mutilation, in its various psycho-social aspects, with its burden of psychological trauma.
make the concepts of ethnonurcing, cultural relativism, and evaluating the cultural competence of the operator. Understand the importance of acquiring transcultural skills and developing models of obstetric and nursing transcultural.

Syllabus

- health and its determinants,
- international and intercontinental migration: numbers, age, women, origin, geographical location, motivation, living conditions, working and housing conditions, difficulties and needs.
- migrant health problems: health risk factors (direct and indirect determinants), migration pathologies, non communicable diseases and infectious diseases, migratory trauma and psychological / psychiatric problems, how to use health services, access barriers 'Health care (legal, cultural, linguistic, practical problems of usability and discrimination and mistrust), health equity and health care.
- sexual and reproductive health: migratory stress and its influence on women's health, social marginality and negative sites (breast cancer, screening, sexually transmitted diseases, voluntary interruption of pregnancy and family planning, role of obstetrician)
- development of professional skills: intrapersonal skills (stereotypes, stigmatization, discrimination, person-centered approach, communication and language, verbal and non-verbal, reflective listening, emotions, emotional intelligence and automatic thoughts) and intercultural skills (multiculturalism, interculturality, cultural competence and intercultural, sensitivity to diversity and differences).
- Female genital mutilation (numbers, laws, types of mutilation, health risks, short and long term damages, obstetrical and neonatal problems, obstetrical management, postpartum prevention).
- maternal health: numbers in Verona, percentages of pathologies and mortality of native-born migrants, risk factors, difficulty accessing SSN, perception of pain, TC, psychological problems, maternal mortality and suicide.
- maternage models: strengths and weaknesses of the various models.
- transcultural midwifery: what is communication barriers, Madeline Leininger, ethnoursing, transcultural phenomena, language and support, countertransference, critical care.
- models of transcultural assistance: cultural competence, transcultural nursing, modeling skills assessment of the operator, the process of acquiring cultural competences, the sunrise model, the concepts of etnolouring, the holographic model of the complexity of Prunell and Paulanka, functional models Gordon, the integration of the two models for proper planning of transcultural assistance.

Assessment methods and criteria

Teaching methods: frontal and interactive lessons, through film vision, role play and intervention by external experts; guided case analysis of clinical cases, with plenary debate.

Group work on a topic chosen in the transcultural field and presentation of work both in paper form and through ppt and discussion in class
