## Learning outcomes

Module: STATISTICA MEDICA E EPIDEMIOLOGIA

The course aims to make students able to: describe and interpret the informations about a set of data; know and interpret the main measures of frequency and association in the epidemiological field.

Module: STATISTICA PER LA RICERCA SPERIMENTALE

The course aims to make students able to: use and interpret the main measures of frequency and association in the epidemiological field; recognize and critically assess the main study design

Module: METODOLOGIA DELLA RICERCA SOCIALE
-------
Aims of this course are focalized on a specific topic: the questionnaire in health care research and practice.
The course will provide methodological and practical issues that should allow the student to make theoretical and operational decision related to the adoption or a construction of questionnaire in the health care field.

## Syllabus

Module: STATISTICA MEDICA E EPIDEMIOLOGIA

MEDICAL STATISTICS
• Collection and presentation of data: measurement, types of variables and measurement scales; sensitivity and specificity of a measurement procedure; one-way and two-way tables; absolute and relative frequencies; cumulative frequencies.
• Measure of position: mode, median, quantiles, reference range, arithmetic and weighted mean.
• Measures of spread: range, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, interquartile range.

EPIDEMIOLOGY
• Introduction to epidemiology: definition of epidemiology; outcome, occurrence parameter, determinant.
• Measure of occurrence: incidence, cumulative incidence, prevalence.
• Measure of association: attributable risk, relative risk, odds ratio; confounding and effect modifiers.
• Diagnostic and screening tests: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value of a screening test.
• Design of Health studies: introduction to cross sectional studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, clinical trial.

Module: STATISTICA PER LA RICERCA SPERIMENTALE

• Programming and analysis of research in the health field
• The objects of the observational research (outcome, occurrence parameter, determinant)
• Measure of disease in the human collective (incidence, cumulative incidence, prevalence)
• Measurement of the association (attributable risk, relative risk, Odds Ratio)
• Confounding, effect modifiers and Bias
• Classification and design of health studies (cross sectional studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, clinical trial)

• Quantitative research in Health care
• Diagnostic and screening tests: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value of a screening test
• Ethical principles for research involving humans
• Guidelines for a good practice in research

Module: METODOLOGIA DELLA RICERCA SOCIALE

The course includes the following subjects:
- General aspects on the questionnaire, typical research designs requiring questionnaires, types of administration, types of adaptation per subject, languages, culture and objectives.
- Currently used standardized questionnaires: outcome questionnaires and patient-satisfaction questionnaires;
- Questionnaire construction; endpoints and theoretical framework; questionnaire structure; questioning; measurement issues (individual questions and measurement scales);
- Questionnaire and statistics; questionnaire validation and data processing;

Online questionnaires: the course foresees a practical exercise consisting of the construction of a questionnaire through a dedicated software.

## Assessment methods and criteria

Module: STATISTICA MEDICA E EPIDEMIOLOGIA

Written exam with multiple-choice tests and exercises; if this test is passed, then an oral interview will be carried out (optional).

Module: STATISTICA PER LA RICERCA SPERIMENTALE

The final evaluation of the profit will be made through a written test with exercises; if this test is passed, then an oral interview will be carried out.

Exams consists of a multiple response test
