Learning outcomes

-Knowledge of the structure-function relatioships of biological macromolecules
-Understanding of metabolic processes at molecular level
-Knowledge of the connections between biochemical processes and of the relative energetic variations


1. The basic constituents of living organisms: polymeric structure of biological macromolecules.
2. Protein structure and function: structure and classification of amino acids; peptidic bond; the structural levels of proteins; fibrous proteins; globular proteins; haemoglobin and myoglobin: structure, function and allosteric regulation; pathogenic variants of haemoglobin; enzymes: classification and role in chemical reactions.
3. Bioenergetics: metabolism; chemical transformations in a cell; spontaneous reactions in a cell; role of ATP in bioenergetic exchanges; redox reactions in biological systems
4. Structure and metabolism of carbohydrates: monosaccharaides, disaccharides and polysaccharides; glycolysis; gluconeogenesis; structure and function of glycogen; glycogen synthesis and glycogen lysis
5. Citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation: mitochondria; acetylCoA synthesis; citric acid cycle; electron-transport chain; ATP synthesis
6. Structure and metabolism of lipids: polar lipids and structure of biomembranes; cholesterol; triacylglycerols; lipid catabolism
7. Amino acids metabolism: fate of the aminic group and of the carbon chain
8. Nucleotides and nucleic acids: nucleotide structure; structure of DNA and RNA

Assessment methods and criteria

Written test followed by an oral examination
