Overview
This Masters degree course aims to prepare graduates for a highly specialized role in the planning and management of musical events, in the fields of lyric opera and dance, which will require the kind of flexibility that will allow one to smoothly integrate skills and abilities from various areas so as to succeed in the production of theatrical events, in particular live performing arts events. This professional role integrates cultural competence with technical competence so that, in the production and management of events, one is capable of:
1) cooperating in the creation and planning of theatre music projects;
2) comprehending assessments of the economic and technical feasibility of a theatre music project, while exercising the ability to manage a variety of professional activities and relations in the context of production and the relationships with both public and private commissions;
3) following up on and coordinating the different stages of production with a strong propensity for group work as regards both collaborative tasks as well as creative leadership;
4) being engaged in the main economic and management aims (marketing, administration, fund raising, managing personnel);
5) formulating an evaluation of the event while in the planning stages as well as foreseeing and determining what impact the event will have locally;
6) possessing the basic technical skills relative to the integrated use of different media; particular attention will be given to the ability of combining different languages;
7) collaborating at giving greater long-term resonance to the value of the project beyond the event itself.
All of this requires the integration of both a well-informed cultural background in the specific field as well as a solid foundation in the legal and economic aspects with particular reference to the responsibilities of planning and management.
Accordingly this professional role is distinguished by the ability to supervise the various stages of production with an awareness of the principles of complementarity and simultaneity.
Therefore the required competencies are particularly varied. On one hand, a broad cultural background allows a manger to collaborate with professionals possessing artistic competencies and to devise theatrical projects with outstanding cultural value. On the other hand, managerial and technical competencies are necessary to the management of processes of production, organization: principles of economic and financial management, human resources management, marketing and communication, knowledge of the workings of public and cultural institutions both nationally and internationally.
Such competencies allow the manger to collaborate with technically skilled professionals with (administration, press office, etc.) working for businesses in the sector. Given this function of liasison, the manager must possess well-developed competencies in planning and scheduling as well as communication and coordination of human and financial resources.
