Overview
This training project aims at favouring the development of specific competencies needed in assisting senior citizens as regards the ability of:
• using instruments or evaluation procedures that will effectively assess the functional, psychological ad physical state of the client as well as their requirements for assistance;
• evaluating the capabilities of the client, the family or the care-giver to manage the changes connected to aging, to mental and physical resilience, as well as the adoption of appropriate coping strategies;
• preventing and reducing environmental risk factors that contribute to the decline of bodily functions, to the reduction of the quality of life, to social isolation and the development of disabilities;
• assisting the aged and their families by way of multidisciplinary interventions aimed at acute and chronic health problems that are epidemiologically more frequent (e.g. pain, incontinence, dysphagia, malnutrition, falls, delirium and depression) and socially more relevant when it comes to age, such as the autonomy of the person being assisted and issues connected to the specific situation;
• planning and managing nursing assistance on the basis of scientific evidence in order to reduce the most common adverse conditions of the elderly (e.g. infections, falls, confused states of mind, agitation, etc.) by adopting global strategies of intervention that are continuous, immediate and are well-suited to the various contexts of treatment;
• applying practices on the basis of their proven effectiveness, using methods that aim at improving their quality;
• promoting organisational models based on taking responsibility for the elderly client and his family and on personalizing nursing treatment while guaranteeing the continuity of the intervention within the various contexts of treatment;
• applying ethical principals and interpersonal relations that will guarantee an integrated approach to treatment which will help orient and support the client and the family in the management of pain and the problems related to death and dying;
• educating the client, the family or the care-giver with regard to what is normal or abnormal in old age, to the prevention of risks, to a safer environment and to the management of the processes of illness;
• extending knowledge to other health care professionals or care-givers as regards the assistance to the elderly by way of knowledge exchange programs, life-long learning, counselling, tutoring and supervision.
