Research: physiology and development  of synapses both in the central and in the peripheral nervous system.  Focus on the mechanisms of synaptic competition and elimination during development, and on the synaptic plasticity in the adult. Intracellular and patch-clamp electrophysiological techniques. Relevant findings: experimental demonstration of the importance of pattern of electric activity of motoneurons in determining the competitive outcome during the developmental process of synaptic elimination; 2) demonstration that motoneurons’ firing activity is highly synchronous at birth, and become asynchronous within 2 weeks from birth. This finding is of relevance in the process of synaptic competition. 3) experimental demonstration that the so called “silent synapses” lack of glutamatergic AMPA-type receptors.
Teaching: Human Physiology to dental students.

Synapse competition and plasticity Synaptic contacts are more abundant in the developing animal than in the adult. Their reduction is a process known as "synapse competition". In the adult animal, although their overall number is stable, the synapses can modify their efficacy in many ways, a property called "synapse plasticity". Both synapse competition and synapse plasticity are processes regulated by the electrical activity of the nervous system. Neurosciences
