Learning outcomes

The aim is to learn the actual basics of emergency general surgery, both thoracic and abdominal, through real clinical cases.
Focus on clinical and diagnostic approach to the acute abdomen and its surgical indications.
Focus on clinical and diagnostic approach to acute disorders of the pleural cavity and their surgical indications
Overview of chest and abdominal trauma, clinical and diagnostic approach

Syllabus

Abdomen
Approach to the non-traumatic acute abdomen patient
Abdominal trauma (blunt and penetrating): medical and surgical approach through real clinical cases
Upper gastro-intestinal surgical pathology (esophagus, stomach and duodenum) in acute care patients
Lower gastro-intestinal surgical pathology (jejunum, ileus, colon and rectum) in acute care patients
Surgical conditions of the abdominal wall: hernias, infections, hematomas

Chest
Blunt and penetrating chest trauma: medical and surgical approach through real clinical cases
Pleural effusions: overview and clinical approach in acute care patients (hemothorax/pyothorax/chylothorax)
Surgical pathology of the pleural cavity, lungs and mediastinum in acute care patients
Pneumothorax: overview, clinical approach, diagnostic and surgical procedures
