Overview
• Awareness that treating patients with epilepsy and research in epilepsy depends on the integrated use of multiple disciplines
• Knowledge of the neurobiological basis of epileptic crises
• Knowledge of different types of epileptic crises from different points of view: semiological, neruophysical and nosological
• Knowledge and awareness of the complexities of the nosographic classification of epilepsy
• Knowledge of the epidemiology of epilepsy
• Knowledge and awareness of the value of electrophysiological studies of brain functions
• Knowledge of using appropriate neuro images in epileptological diagnoses
• Knowledge of the pathological and etiological basis of epilepsy
• Knowledge of the genetics of epilepsy.
• Knowledge of differentiated diagnoses of epilepsy
• Knowledge of the psychological, social and legal problems connected to epilepsy
• Knowledge of the neuropsychological aspects connected to epilepsy during the various stages of life
• Knowledge of the problems of comorbidity connected with epilepsy
• Providing a fundamental understanding of the pharmaceutical bases of the therapy for epilepsy and the developments connected to recent progress in the biomolecular field
• Knowledge of the principal aspects connected to experimentation with new pharmaceuticals in the epileptological field
• Knowledge of the definition and the problems of pharmaceutical resistance
• Knowledge of the principles of effective communication between doctor and patient in epileptology
• Knowledge of the problems of disabilities connected with epilepsy
• Knowledge of the main problems with managing epilepsy in the Third World
• Knowledge of the problems relative to SUDEP
In particular course participants will be provided with the knowledge necessary to:
• formulate diagnostic hypotheses on a clinical basis of the various nosological entities of epilepsy at different stages of life;
• analyse the results of relevant neurophysiological studies with particular reference to electroencephalography and polygraphic recordings;
• write neurophysiological reports concerning the above mentioned methods;
• manage medical therapy for different forms of epilepsy with particular attention paid to recent pharmaceuticals;
• guide patients in choosing non-pharmaceutical therapy (neurosurgical, neurostimulation therapy);
• have a knowledge of neurophysical methods of non-invasive and invasive pre-surgical monitoring;
• organize and manage a surgery dedicated to epilepsy;
• provide patients with adequate informative and psychological support.
