Learning outcomes

Since it is known that cardiovascular disease has a multifactorial aetiology the aim of the course is to provide the student with the ability to:
- early identification of cardiovascular risk factors (hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, smoking, overweight/obesity and physical inactivity);
- assess the global cardiovascular risk using the risk charts and the individual score;
- know how to use therapeutic strategies (in particular lifestyle changes and drug therapies) because the correction of each of the individual risk factors can significantly reduce the overall cardiovascular risk.

Syllabus

1) Epidemiology of cardiovascular disease and outline of physiopathology of atherosclerosis
2) Role of endothelial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis
3) Identification of cardiovascular risk factors and assessment of global cardiovascular risk
4) Atherosclerotic plaque instability and risk of cardiovascular events
