Learning outcomes

EPIDEMIOLOGY AND STATISTICS The course aims to provide knowledge and insights about the main techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics, epidemiological studies and related measures of frequency and association of diseases in order to critically evaluate scientific articles. The course also aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge regarding social research methods, with an in-depth analysis of the questionnaire tool, and the use of information systems and databases in the organization. STATISTICS FOR EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH At the end of the course, the student must be able to: 1. Measure the prevalence and incidence of a disease 2. Evaluate the impact of risk factors on health, calculate the attributable risk and the relative risk ratio 3. Compare the mortality rate in populations with different age and gender through direct and indirect standardization 4. Identify the link between cause and effect from an epidemiological perspective 5. Describe the characteristics, indications, advantages and disadvantages of the main types of epidemiological studies (transversal, cohort, case-control) 6. Critically evaluate epidemiological articles. METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL RESEARCH The course aims to increase the knowledge of social research methods, with particular reference to questionnaires as well as the theoretical and practical knowledge required to construct and manage a questionnaire in the health sector. MEDICAL STATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY The course aims to increase the knowledge of the analysis and interpretation of descriptive and inferential statistical procedures most commonly utilized in the scientific literature. COMPUTERIZED DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN ORGANIZATIONS The course aims to provide the most advanced knowledge on the methodology to develop information systems in the organization environment and carry out database design. A further aim is to implement a database through the use of a computerized data management system.

INTRODUCTION TO EPIDEMIOLOGY Definition of Epidemiology: epidemiology as the science of prevention. Epidemiologic transition during the XX century. Outcome, parameter of occurrence, determinant, occurrence relation MEASURES OF DISEASE FREQUENCY The disease as a status or an event: prevalence and incidence Cumulative incidence and incidence rate Relation between incidence, duration and prevalence MEASURES OF ASSOCIATION Risk Difference, Relative Risk, Etiologic fraction, Odds Ratio STANDARDIZATION Direct and indirect standardization CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP IN EPIDEMIOLOGY Deterministic and probabilistic approach to cause-effect relationship. Hill’s causal criteria, Rothman’s “causal pie model”. Confounder and effect modifier. MAIN ERRORS IN EPIDEMIOLOGIC STUDIES Random error Systematic error: information, selection and confounding bias. The written examination will consist of about 25 multiple choice questions with 5-8 possible answers, and one exercise of Epidemiology on a simple data set. Wrong answers to the written examination will be orally discussed with the student.

The final evaluation of the profit will be made through a written test with exercises; if this test is passed, then an oral interview will be carried out.
