Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- know the principles of the Chronic Care Model and Initiative Medicine;
- to know the importance of physical activity in a preventive perspective of the main pathologies;
- know the indications of the International Guidelines on physical activity management in patients suffering from the main chronic musculoskeletal, cardio-vascular, respiratory, neurological, metabolic, oncological and psychiatric diseases;
- design a personalized exercise program for the patient according to the ICF principles;
- master strategies to increase patient adherence also through technology and know the factors limiting physical activity.

Syllabus

Part 1 - 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Scientific Report
- Data on the relevance of the "Inactivity" problem in Italy and the Veneto region
- Evolutionary bases of laziness and the role of Contingency and Motivation to overcome exercise resistance
- Main evidences, reported in the Guidelines, of the benefits of physical activity
- WHO indications on optimal activity levels (in MET, Kcal and minutes / week)
- Basic concepts: type of activity, absolute / relative intensity, FITT-VP principle
- Safety during physical activity
- Scientific evidence on: overall benefits of physical activity, sedentary damage, indications for young people, the elderly, pregnant and postpartum women, overweight and obesity

Part 2 - Physical activity and chronic diseases
- Introduction to the Chronic Care Model and management differences between acute and chronic patients
- Overview on pain, on the model of Fear Avoidance and on the role of physical activity in the resolution of central sensitization
- Role, type and quantity of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of the main musculoskeletal disorders: osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, Chronic Low Back Pain, fibromyalgia, cervicalgia, tendinopathies
- Role, type and amount of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases
- Role, type and amount of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases
- Role, type and quantity of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of metabolic pathologies
- Role, type and amount of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of oncological diseases
- Role, type and amount of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of the main neurological diseases: epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, intellectual disability and Down syndrome, Spinal cord injuries, headache
- Role, type and amount of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of psychiatric diseases

Part 3 - Therapeutic exercise
- Introduction to the concept of motor control in normality and consequent changes to pain
- Tools that the physiotherapist has to restore functionality and, consequently, the independence of the subject
- Recall of the basic concepts of the ICF and the role of the physiotherapist in prevention, recovery of impairments, activities and social participation
- Therapeutic exercise parameters: load management, progression, type, frequency
- Use of cognitive facilities (feedbacks, attention focuses ...) and adherence management techniques to enhance the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise

Assessment methods and criteria

Targets:
To pass the exam students will have to demonstrate:
- know the basic concepts and indications of physical activity set out in the Guidelines;
- know the theoretical contents concerning physical activity and the benefits demonstrated in chronic pathologies;
- know how to program specific therapeutic exercises for a specific patient.

Contents:
The exam contents cover all the topics covered in class and reported in the program of this course. In summary:
- 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Scientific Report;
- physical activity and chronic pathologies;
- therapeutic exercise.

Assessment method:
- oral exam by interview with the teacher (score from 0 to 30 with honors)
