Learning outcomes

EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
-Provide knowledge concerning the identification of terminal patient and his/ her family’s needs.
-Provide tools and skills regarding the identification of symptoms and their management along the disease’s progress
-Provide knowledge regarding the social, cultural and legislative evolution of taking in charge Patients affected by chronic pathologies and the ethical impact in end-life choices.

Learning Results:
KNOWLEDGE:
1. Recognize oncologic and non-oncologic patients ending life trajectories, and their physical-phycological and social needs.
2. Learning the pain evaluation scales for adults and non-collaborating people.
3. Learning helpful philosophies related to supporting therapies in palliative cares.
4. Learning different helpful settings in palliative care.

SKILLS:
1. Palliative care definition and its employment fields.
2. Detecting palliative cares needs and flaws.
3. Development of a proper and meaningful helpful pathway, applying standardized tracts by personal approach.


Syllabus


PROGRAM:
The classes will discuss the following topics:
1. Palliative Care, general and ethical aspects
2. Pain: measurement scales and their application; Pain control drugs, employment, side-effects and methods of administrations.
3. Helpful management of chronic pain in adults, collaborating and non-collaborating elders.
4. Managements of symptoms in oncologic cases while being treated or in the last phase (in this case, not only oncologic cases):
a. Itch
b. Stomatitis
c. Drying mucosa
d. Chronic strain
e. Nausea and vomit
f. Dehydration
g. Dyspnea and ranting breath
h. Delirium
i. Anorexia and Cachexia
j. Palliative sedation.
5. Company to ending life and grief.
6. Management of educational and helpful pathway for a patient affected by hepatic cirrhosis (hemorrhagic risk, confusion, awareness alteration due to encephalopathy).

TEACHING METHODS:

Classes consist in classic lessons, group discussions and exercise sections on clinical cases, testimonies and small videos.
Besides the mandatory books for the written part, students are provided with the following in-depth texts.

Exam modality:
The exam aims to evaluate the reached knowledge concerning the previously mentioned goals.
The written exam consists in multiple choices questions.
