Learning outcomes

Knowledge of the main neurological diseases with particular attention to the related clinical and anatomical correlates and to the diagnostic path from the neurological syndrome to the etiological diagnosis, integrating the information acquired by attending the Neurological Semeiotic course.
Acquisition of knowledge leading to the identification of the main neurological diseases, with particular attention to the ones of special physiotherapeutic relevance (stroke, degenerative diseases, coma, vegetative state) in order to allow a competent relationship with the neurological patient.

Syllabus

The clinical method of neurology.
Neurological anamnesis.
The neurological examination.
Syndromic diagnosis in neurology.
Cranial nerves palsy; multiple cranial nerves palsy.
Brainstem syndromes.
Coma and related disorders of counsciousness.
Epilepsy: classification and clinical approach.
Dementia: Alzheimer disease, Lewy body disease, frontotemporal dementia. Dementia in neurodegenerative and systemic diseases.
Clinical aproach to the patient with dementia.
Neurological complications of HIV.
Degenerative diseases of the nervous system: Parkinson’s disease and parkinsonism, Huntington’s disease, focal and generalized dystonia, tics, myoclonus, tremor and ballismus.
Ataxias (spinocerebellar, cortical).
Motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and variants; progressive spinal muscular atrophy).
Cerebrovascular diseases: ischaemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Chronic vasculopathy; TIA; Neurovascular clinical syndromes. Clinical approach to the patient with stroke.
Multiple Sclerosis and inflammatory diseases of CNS.
Peripheral nerves disorders: acute, subacute and chronic polyneuropathy. Mononeuropathy (entrapment syndromes); Radiculopathies.
Inflammatory myopathy; Muscular dystrophies; Myastenia gravis.
Headaches: Migraine; Tension headache; Cluster headache.
Intracranial neoplasm; Intracranial hypertension syndrome.
