Learning outcomes

Medical students will be able to grasp basic knowledge related to epidemiology, classification, pathophysiology, aetiology and microbiological diagnostics of main infectious disease syndromes. In particular they will undertstand how to perform paracentesis, thoracentesis and lumbar puncture; how to interpret in a critical way microbiological tests, for example blood/urine/stool culture, considering also also the susceptibility pattern of the isolated microrganisms. Other tests that will be considered will be HBV, HCV and HIV sierology. Finally they will understand how to recognize main ID syndromes using both clinical history, and microbiological tests. Medical students will be able to grasp basic knowledge about antimicrobial treatmnent, both empirical and specifical.

• Epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical presentation and treatment of HIV infection, AIDS and main opportunistic AIDS-related diseases.
• Respiratory infections: pneumonia, flu, pertussis and diphtheria.
• Pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis.
• International traveler's infectious diseases.
• Mumps, infective esanatemias.
• Sepsis, endocarditis
• Gastroenteritis, infective intoxications and toxinfections.
• Encephalitis, meningitis and rabies.
• urinary tract infections
• TORCH complex infections
• viral hepatitis
• EBV and CMV infections
• Health-care associated infections
• Lyme disease, leptospirosis
• Malaria
• Brucellosis
• Tetanus, botulism
