ENGLISH SYLLABUS:
Lesson 1
The cancer patient: the natural pathway of cancer and related patients’ needs:
• Diagnosis, staging and therapy: the outpatient and the role of the Day Service
• The role of the ward during the initial staging of the illness and active therapy
• The follow-up
• The last stage of the disease: role of the ward and of the local structures (GPs, Home help, Hospice)
Clinical case of a patient during the last phase
Lesson 2
EBM: the importance of guidelines and clinical trials
Examples of various guidelines (ESMO and AIOM)
The different phases of clinical trials; example of a randomized phase III clinical trial
Lesson 3
Different settings of treatment:
• Adjuvant and neo-adjuvant treatments: cycles number, frequency, restaging
• Therapy lines of metastatic cancer: cycles number, frequency, restaging
Examples of some chemotherapeutic cycles and therapeutic schemes. A clinical case.
Lesson 4
Other therapies
• The importance of multidisciplinarity
• Curative and palliative surgery and radiotherapy
• Supportive therapies: emesis, growing factors

Pain therapy and palliative cares
