Learning outcomes

The purpose of the module is to provide students with a clear vision of the type of radiation sources used in nuclear medicine, of how it is used and the specific reasons for the choices of radionuclides, of how to monitor radiation, how they interact with matter, what are the design requirements and expected behaviors for internal and external workers and for population and patients.

Photon absorption attenuation . Screens . Outline of neutrons
The radiation detectors - examples of calculation of the dose - dosimeters and DPI in particular for nuclear medicine. Calculation of flux and dose tables and constants tabulated .

Radiation protection
Radiation , contamination outside and inside : differences and examples , compartment models
History of radiation protection, generic risk and radioprotectionist comparisation
ICRP and 3 basic principles .
Classifications of workers and environments . Radiation protection measures with sources and radioactive waste .
Operating procedures , as internal security and operating procedures for departments and for patients ..
The regulatory system ( 230/95 ) and its practical implications .

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam with exercises and oral questions with possible interview .
