At the end of the course students should know: - The role of endocrine factors during exercise adaptation, the physiological changes and the most common and important pathological modifications of these factors during lifetime; - The relationships between physical activity and insulin sensitivity, and the mechanisms involved in this phenomenon; - The main features of the different types of diabetes mellitus, exercise prescription in order to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes, alterations to exercise adaptation related to diabetes and its pharmacological treatment, adaptations required in subjects with type 1 diabetes before, during and after exercise; - The adverse effect on health of sedentary behavior, and the beneficial effect of interrupting prolonged sitting, in the general population and in subjects with metabolic disorders; - Pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome, how to prescribe physical activity in order to prevent and treat metabolic syndrome, physical exercise in the treatment of obesity; - Main consequences on exercise performance of the most common endocrine disorders; - Interactions between female reproductive function and exercise performance, effects on exercise capacity of the main drugs used to modify physiological and pathological aspects of female reproductive function; - Main characteristics of the polycystic ovary syndrome, changes in exercise capacity in women with this syndrome, physical activity in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome; - Physical activity in the prevention and treatment of gestational diabetes.

- Role of the endocrine system in exercise adaptation; energy metabolism at rest and during physical activity; - Beneficial effects of physical activity and barriers to exercise in the elderly. Endocrine system changes in the healthy elderly and their effects on hormonal adaptations related to exercise; - Exercise and insulin sensitivity: short-term and chronic effects; - Elements of clinical and therapeutic approach to type 2 diabetes; chronic complications of diabetes; - Medical and motor evaluation in individuals with type 2 diabetes; limitation to physical exercise in the presence of diabetes complications; anti-diabetic drugs and exercise interactions; - Exercise prescription in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes; - Sedentary behavior and health; effects of interrupting prolonged sitting; - Obesity and metabolic syndrome: diagnostic criteria, prevalence, etiopathogenesis, complications; role of exercise in individuals with obesity and metabolic syndrome; - Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: elements of clinical and therapeutic approach; consequences of Diabetes and its therapy on physical activity adaptation; effects of different types of exercise on blood glucose levels; therapeutic adaptations to exercise in subjects with type 1 diabetes; - Athlete’s reproductive alterations and medical implications; effects of therapy for menstrual disorders on exercise performance; relationships between polycystic ovary syndrome and physical activity; - Pregnancy and physical activity. Role of physical activity in gestational diabetes prevention and treatment; - Most common endocrine glands alterations: general implications and consequences on exercise adaptation. In addition to suggested readings, updated scientific literature on the course topics is recommended.
