Overview
Occupational medicine specialists need to have theoretical, scientific and professional expertise in plant design and installation, industrial chemistry and technology, statistics and epidemiological methodology, physiology and work psychology, ergonomics, toxicology, radiobiology, work health and safety, work-related clinical diseases, clinical and specialised medicine, therapies, organisation of first aid, emergency treatment, forensic medicine, and legal studies related to work, communication, economics and business management.
Specific fields of competence required include identifying and evaluating occupational risks, health monitoring, biological monitoring, clinical and instrumental diagnosis of work-related diseases, differential diagnosis, encouraging health in the workplace, identifying hypersensitive people, adapting work to the individual, evaluating disabilities and work compatibilities, rehabilitation, information, specific training for preventing illnesses and accidents, expanding scientific knowledge in adverse factors for work health and safety, knowing and applying national and international regulations, consulting to identify risks and implement preventative measures, and managing occupational medical services in the workplace.
