Overview
Pathological anatomy specialists need to have theoretical, scientific and professional knowledge in the field of human pathologies, including macroscopic, microscopic, ultrastructural, molecular and pathological autopsies, in order to be experts in this field.
They must be able to recognise and diagnose morphological changes in organs, tissues and cells in cytological preparations, biopsy material and diagnostic examinations at microscopic and macroscopic level. They must have acquired essential skills in molecular biology and human pathology concerning the application and diagnostic interpretation of anatomical, histological, cytological, histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural methods, as well as be able to use procedures for quality control and quantitative assessment. Specialists in pathological anatomy have specific areas of expertise such as diagnosis by autopsy, macroscopic, histopathological, cytopathological, intraoperative histo-cyto-pathological and ultrastructural diagnosis, and the biomolecular characterisation of damage to cells, tissues, organs and the whole body. These diagnoses are also useful for prognostic and therapeutic orientation, epicritical assessments and related anatomical and clinical issues.
